PB Crave and Project Peanut Butter Team Up to Fight Malnutrition

By Jeff Sheerin

In addition to making great-tasting peanut butter, PB Crave has set out on a mission to fight malnutrition across the globe. Every year, over 3 million children under the age of 5 die from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), while over 50 million children throughout the world currently suffer from some type of malnutrition. So to bring an end to these statistics, PB Crave has partnered with Project Peanut Butter, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives with Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF).

What is RUTF?

RUTF is a peanut butter-based food loaded with the essential fats, proteins, and other nutrients needed to treat malnutrition. To date, Project Peanut Butter has helped save the lives of over 100,000 children suffering from malnutrition. Project Peanut Butter produces RUTF in five different countries in Africa and at a small-scale facility in The Philippines. After purchasing peanuts from local farmers in those regions, the noble and talented staff at Project Peanut Butter produces and hand delivers RUTF to communities where malnutrition is rampant.

PB Crave visits Project Peanut Butter

Curt Riess, the owner of Sweet Harvest Foods and PB Crave recently visited the Project Peanut Butter facility in Free Town, Sierra Leone to learn more about the operations at Project Peanut Butter. In Sierra Leone, a large portion of the population obtains their food through subsistence agriculture, a type of farming in which families feed themselves with the food that they grow. However, large-scale land acquisitions by outside investors has limited farmers’ access to land in Sierra Leone, resulting in higher food prices and one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world. During the visit, Sweet Harvest Foods held workshops to teach remaining local farmers sustainable entrepreneurial skills that they can use to expand their market and keep food prices stable.

According to Riess, experiencing the passion and entrepreneurial savvy of the Project Peanut Butter team was “an honor.” Today, PB Crave donates 2% of the profits of every jar sold to Project Peanut Butter. PB Crave’s unique and unbelievably delicious line of all-natural peanut butter is loaded with nutritious ingredients, such as real cocoa, wild honey, and of course, all-natural peanuts. PB Crave is artisan crafted in small batches with absolutely no hydrogenated oils, trans fat, or high fructose corn syrup, so you know you’re only getting the highest quality, best-tasting peanut butter available.
